Mark Asquith and Kieran McKeefery launched Captivate in the UK in 2018 with a specific positioning: podcast hosting for podcasters who were serious about growth metrics and audience development. Where competitors showed simple download counts, Captivate offered detailed listener analytics, audience demographics, episode performance comparisons, and growth goals with actionable benchmarks. The founders had deep podcast industry experience — Mark had been a podcast consultant and speaker. Captivate grew through the podcast professional community and was endorsed by major podcast industry figures. The product added private podcasting (for internal company podcasts and courses), a website builder, embed players, and Spotify and Apple integration tools. Revenue grew to $50k+/month from a subscription base of thousands of professional and semi-professional podcasters. Captivate was acquired by Global, one of the world's largest audio companies, in 2021 — a significant exit for a bootstrapped UK podcast platform built in just three years.
