Ulysses

The Soulmen — a small German development studio — launched Ulysses in 2010 as a distraction-free writing environment for Mac. The app targeted serious writers: novelists, journalists, bloggers, and academics who needed a tool between a basic text editor and a heavy word processor. Ulysses' key features were a sidebar-based document library, clean Markdown support, and a beautiful writing environment with zero clutter. A major pivot in 2017 from a one-time purchase ($45) to a subscription ($5.99/month) was controversial but ultimately successful — it funded continuous development and tied the team's incentives to user retention. Apple featured Ulysses prominently in App Store editorial repeatedly, calling it one of the best writing apps on any platform. Today Ulysses generates an estimated $2M+ annually from a subscription base of hundreds of thousands of writers. The team remains small — under 20 people — and entirely independent. A canonical example of an indie app surviving and thriving through the subscription transition.
