Fantastical

Fantastical is the calendar and task management app Flexibits built from Los Angeles starting in 2011. It grew to $6M+ ARR as a small team by winning the "best calendar app for Mac and iOS" position through two lasting advantages: the fastest natural language event creation on any platform ("lunch with Marco next Tuesday at noon" creates the event correctly) and the most beautiful interface of any calendar app on Apple platforms, winning Apple Design Awards on both Mac and iPhone. Fantastical unified calendars (iCloud, Google Calendar, Exchange, Outlook) and reminders/tasks into a single view — something Apple's own Calendar and Reminders apps deliberately kept separate. The subscription model transition in 2020 was controversial but financially successful: Flexibits introduced Fantastical Premium ($40/year) while keeping a useful free tier, effectively converting their large user base into recurring revenue. The small team's focus on perfecting a single use case — knowing exactly when and where you need to be — made Fantastical the default recommendation for any Apple user who cared about their calendar.
