GeneratePress
A fast, lightweight, and accessibility-ready WordPress theme.
Tom Usborne launched GeneratePress from British Columbia, Canada in 2013 as a free WordPress theme with a paid premium extension. Tom's philosophy was simplicity and performance: zero bloat, no page builder dependency, pure theme code that loaded fast on any server. GeneratePress focused on developers and technical users who wanted full control and were tired of themes that came bundled with unnecessary features. The free theme became one of the most-installed WordPress themes in the repository, driving a massive funnel to GeneratePress Premium ($59 one-time, then $59/year). The premium plugin added complete color and typography control, sections (layout module), WooCommerce integration, and a design library of ready-made sites. Tom ran GeneratePress largely solo for years, providing support himself and shipping steady updates. Revenue grew to $100k+/month from hundreds of thousands of active licenses. GeneratePress was acquired by Caseproof in 2022, but Tom continued developing it. One of the purest examples of building an audience-first WordPress product through quality, documentation, and community trust.
