Julio Potier, Jonathan Buttigieg and Jean-Baptiste Marchand-Arvier launched WP Rocket from Lyon, France in 2014. Their bet was simple but bold: make a premium-only WordPress caching plugin at $49/year with zero free version. Every other popular WordPress plugin offered a free tier. WP Media bucked the trend, betting that users who actually care about performance will pay for a quality product. They were right. WP Rocket spread through word-of-mouth in the WordPress developer and agency community, where site speed is a professional concern rather than a nice-to-have. The plugin made complex caching — lazy loading, minification, CDN integration, preloading — accessible to non-technical users with a clean dashboard. Within three years, WP Rocket crossed $1M in revenue. By 2016 it was averaging $100k/month. Today it's the most-recommended caching plugin in the WordPress ecosystem, with the team growing to 15+ people across multiple European countries, all while remaining fully independent and bootstrapped.
