Splitwise

Jon Bittner and Ryan Laughlin launched Splitwise in 2011 in Boston. The app solved a genuinely annoying universal problem: figuring out who owes what when a group of people share expenses — rent, utilities, travel, dinner. Splitwise let groups create shared expense lists, track who paid for what, and automatically calculated the simplest set of transactions to settle all debts. The app was free and grew purely through organic sharing — users invited friends because the product only worked with other users. It spread through colleges, roommate groups, friend circles, and travel companions. Splitwise reached millions of active users. The business model evolved to include Splitwise Pro (no ads, advanced analytics) and the company explored expense card products. In 2023 Splitwise was acquired by LMN, a private equity firm, for an undisclosed amount. For over a decade it operated as a profitable bootstrapped product serving tens of millions of expense splits. An enduring example of a social utility growing through genuine word-of-mouth necessity.
